Gritstone Edges of the Peak District (1 day workshop)

Gritstone Edges of the Peak District workshop

Saturday October 23rd 2010
4 places remaining

08.000 hrs to Sunset (optional)

Following on from his article in Outdoor Photography earlier in the year on this region and the success of the same workshops that followed, Robert will once again be heading for the Peaks for this one day workshop.

The day will commence at 08.00 hrs, starting at Stanage Edge then moving on to Curbar and Baslow Edge. These three edges lie in the east of the Peak District National Park and form an almost continual line of cliffs. Stunning views can be had in all directions with huge boulders, abandoned mill stones and stone walls forming dramatic compositions.

Following a brief meet and greet we will head up onto Stanage Edge where photography will commence until midday.

Robert will begin by demonstrating on a scene, utilising foreground interest and using polarising and neutral density graduated filters. Such things as reading a histogram, iso sensitivity settings and the thought process behind the image will also be covered. He will go through in detail why he has chosen a specific lens and opted for that particular composition.

Robert will then invite each to look through the viewfinder and ask questions. From here you will spread out (but not too far) to seek out your own pictures. Robert will be close at hand and attend to each in turn.

Over the many years that Robert has been leading workshops he has mastered the ability to occasionally stand back and watch participants work rather than constantly looking over their shoulder. This allows Robert to see how you are working and will then approach if he sees you encountering a problem or of course if he is asked for advice. But be rest assured, Robert will be back, at intervals, to see how you are getting on, regardless.

At about 12.00 hrs we will make our way back to the car park and head to the pub for lunch. The pub has been chosen not just due to its location, being just a stones throw from Curbar and Baslow Edge, but because Robert and his guests have always been happy with both the quality of the food and service provided. This is the perfect time to relax and discuss the morning and also what lies ahead. After lunch we will burn off the calories and head for the two remaining Edges!

Depending on the weather, Robert urges you to stay till sunset but this is really entirely up to you. Sunset is approximately 17.50 hrs and if the weather's promising the views and colour's are quite spectacular.

There will be a maximum of 6 participants on a first come first served basis to ensure everyone benefits from Robert's knowledge and experience. The day is suitable for those of all levels and whether you have only recently picked up a camera or have been shooting for years, you are sure to find this an enjoyable and beneficial day. Robert will be close at hand to give advice covering such things as exposure, use of filters and lens selection. There will be a strong emphasis on creating images with visual impact.

Please note that a moderate fitness level is required. Although we shall not be walking many miles, the very nature of the Peak District means there will be slopes leading to the edges themselves. Once we are at the top, the walking is quite level and easy. Even with cameras and a tripod!

How to book

To receive a booking form please contact Robert here or alternatively click here to download one. To book your place Robert requires a £30 deposit which can be payable either by cheque or paypal. The latter will secure your place as soon as Robert receives the funds but will still require the completed booking form as soon as possible. This is a very useful method since should you be sending a cheque along with the form, it may take several days to arrive thereby delaying your booking. Full payment can also be made by this method.

Remaining balance can either be paid on the day or through paypal. If paying by paypal this will need to be settled at least 7 days before the workshop date. Robert will confirm receipt of this by email.

Once the booking form is received, Robert will email details to you regarding suggested equipment, clothing and meeting place.

Testimonials

First of all, many thanks for the workshop that you led in the Peaks recently. As a beginner to DSLR cameras and photography, I found that your patient, positive and extremely helpful approach, combined with your depth of knowledge, enthusiasm and great technical skill - enabled me to learn a great deal in just one day -particularly how to see, compose and take a good photo. Whilst I struggled to get to grips with all of the learning, I really enjoyed the day and from my point of view, I have a few photos which I am really pleased with. I would never have taken without the benefit of your advice, guidance and support. Thanks again.
Tim (Warrington, Cheshire).

Dear Rob, I would just like to thank you for a perfect day in the peak district
Fred (Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex).

Firstly, let me thank you for a wonderful day in the Peak District. We all thoroughly enjoyed the way you ran the programme and gave us individual attention. I learnt quite a lot from your instructions and guidance given on the day and my photography is better for it. I'm getting better composition and exposures. Still quite a way to go yet, but getting there no doubt!
Sam (Gillingham, Kent)
