Dark Peak Landscapes
Peak District in Autumn

Kent’s wildflowers (one day workshop)

November 1st - 2nd 2012 Places left

Price: £345

Group size: 6

Over the last few years the Peak District has become my favourite location for landscape photography in the UK. Indeed, as a result of those images I took on my first visit, I had an article published in Outdoor Photography magazine and subsequently held 5 workshops to this region, such has been its impact.

What I so enjoy about photographing the Dark Peak region of this National Park is that although much of it is quite accessible it is still possible to experience a sense of wildness and that, regardless of weather conditions, striking, memorable images are possible.

I personally favour the Dark Peak, which is situated to the north, as opposed to the White Peak in the south, as it is more rugged and wild. In the Dark Peak region there are huge gritstone edges, moorland plateaus and dark peat-stained streams. Tumbling waterfalls, meandering stone walls and ancient woodlands tinged with the warm, vibrant colours of autumn, make it a truly exciting location for photography.

This 2 day landscape photography workshop begins at 12pm on the first day and continues till dusk (weather permitting) on the 2nd.

Our accommodation will be a 4* guest house in the village of Castleton, Derbyshire, making an ideal base from which to explore and photograph.

After a brief meet and greet we will head out and visit 2 or 3 locations and photograph till dusk (weather permitting). We will then have a relaxing evening meal and, over a few drinks, natter and discuss the following day’s events. I will give a short tutorial outlining how I process my images and show those taken at locations we have visited and will visit the following day. You are also very welcome to bring along a few prints or images on a USB stick for me to critique.

On the 2nd day we start by heading out for a dawn shoot (this is optional but recommended) and return mid-morning for a hearty breakfast at the B&B before again, setting off to photograph at several locations until dusk (weather permitting). After which, we will make our way back to the B&B to collect our cars and say our farewells.

Group size will kept to a maximum of just 6 so that I can spend as much time with each as you would like or want. The day is suitable for those of all levels and whether you have only recently picked up a camera or have been shooting for years, you are sure to find this an enjoyable and beneficial workshop. I will be covering such things as exposure, filtration, lens selection, reading the histogram and composition. Emphasis will be given on creating images with strong, visual impact.

Price includes: Transport to locations, one night’s accommodation / sole-occupancy with en-suite (discounts available for double or twin sharing), breakfast on the 2nd day, dinner on the 1st day and 1st drink with meal, packed lunch on both.

Price excludes: Additional snacks and drinks, not mentioned, at meal times.

Equipment required

The workshop is suitable for those that own a Bridge, DSLR or medium format camera with, ideally, lenses ranging from a wide-angle to telephoto zoom. A tripod will be essential for those dawn/dusk shoots and polarising and neutral-density grads, useful. It is essential that you have an understanding of exposure.

Fitness level

Medium. Although we will not be walking very long distances, by the very nature of this region there will be steep slopes (taking approximately 15 minutes) to walk up as well as rocky, slippery ground, particularly near waterfalls.
