The county of Kent is one of the strongholds of our target species, the Lady Orchid. This beautiful flower thrives in the South East and there is one site in particular where they can be found in their dozens! I have held a number of workshops here over the last couple of years for camera clubs and so with this in mind I have decided to run a workshop at this very special site.

This 3 hour photography workshop is suitable for absolute beginners as well as the more advanced photographer and as there will only be a maximum of 6 in the group, I can easily move between you advising and answering any questions you may have on a one-to-one basis.

Upon meeting at the arranged spot we will car share to take us closer to the reserve. I will begin by illustrating how I would go about photographing an individual plant. Such things as viewpoint, lens selection, depth of field and exposure will all be covered as well as using reflectors and flash. It is at this point when participants are welcomed to ask any questions, after which, you will disperse and choose your own specimen to photograph. I will then, in turn, see how each of you are getting on. After a while we will move on to another area where I will demonstrate how using a wide-angle lens can add impact to an image as well as showing the plant within it’s habitat. Time permitting, there is an adjacent wood with a nice, wide ride where other flowers such as columbine, bugle and ground ivy thrive.

Other possible subjects of note include the Greater Butterfly Orchid, White Helleborine, Green Hairstreak and one of the country’s rarest (and smallest butterflies) the Duke of Burgundy (Fritillary) which is surprisingly easy to approach.

I have chosen to hold this workshop from late afternoon to evening so that as the day draws on you will benefit from the low, warm, early evening sunlight. It will also be cooler since it is in quite an open area.

Those attending are welcome to bring along a few prints which I am very happy to critique. It also allows me to assess your ability prior to the workshop starting in earnest.

Numbers will be limited to a maximum of just 6 participants to enable me to spend quality time with each, something impossible to do with much larger groups.

Price includes: Tuition and email review of images.
Price does not include: Refreshments.

Equipment required

As Lady Orchids are quite large flowers, no specialised close-up equipment is required. A Bridge or SLR with wide-angle and medium telephoto zoom will be sufficient. However, should you have close-up filters, extension tubes and/or a macro lens, these will be useful though not essential. A full list of what to bring will be supplied upon receipt of booking.

Fitness level

Low. Level walking. Total distance of about 1 mile.
